Compatibility FAQ

Connectors & System Compatibility

Are all LV Outdoors lights compatible with each other?

Yes. All LV Outdoors spotlights and wall lights use the same heavy-duty rubber Plug & Play screw-lock connectors and run on 12V DC. You can mix AlderMax spotlights, copper spotlights, wall lights, and the in-ground uplighter on the same transformer and loom, provided the total wattage stays within your transformer's rating (30W or 100W).

Can I connect LV Outdoors lights to other systems?

No, all companies have their own proprietary connectors.

Can I mix 12V and 240V lights on the same system?

No. Our transformers output 12V DC only. Some wall light models (Stainless Steel Double Up/Down) can accept either 12V or 240V depending on the bulb fitted, but they must not be connected to our 12V transformer when configured for 240V. Keep the two voltages on completely separate circuits.

Please note that 240V systems should always be connected to an RCD device and must be installed by a qualified electrician.

What connector types does the LV Outdoors system use?

All cables use a 2-core screw-lock rubber Plug & Play connector with an O-ring weatherproof seal. Available accessories include:

  • T-Connectors – split one cable run into a light plus a continuing branch (1m each way)
  • Y-Connectors (1-into-3) – divide one input into three output branches (0.3m each)
  • Male Connector Cables – bare 2-core wire on one end; LV Outdoors male plug on the other, for wiring non-plug-and-play or third-party 12V lights

Cable Distance & Voltage Drop

How long can a cable run be before the lights dim?

Voltage drop increases with cable length and load. Our kits are supplied with looms sized to the number of lights: 10m for 3–4 light kits, up to 22m for 12-light kits. Up to 50m of cable you are unlikely to experience any problems. Just don’t go too close to the maximum load of your transformer.

What loom lengths are included with each kit?

  • 3 & 4 light kits – 10m loom
  • 5 & 6 light kits – 15m loom
  • 8 light kit – 18m loom
  • 10 light kit – 20m loom
  • 12 light kit – 22m loom

Extension cables are available separately in 1m, 2m, 5m, and 10m lengths to reach individual lights beyond the loom.

Can I daisy-chain multiple extension cables together?

Yes. LV Outdoors extension cables connect end-to-end. Bear in mind that the longer the total run, the more voltage drop you may experience. For best results, keep individual spotlight branch runs as short as practical and run the main loom closer to the lights.

Waterproofing & IP Ratings

What do the IP ratings mean for my installation?

  • IP65 (AlderMax spotlights and wall lights) – dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets. Suitable for outdoor walls in most UK weather. Not recommended for direct seafront exposure or submerged use such as with water features.
  • IP64 (transformers, AlderMax kits) – dust-tight and splash-proof from all directions. Survives well and reliable in a British garden all year around. The transformer must be wall or fence mounted off the ground; not suitable for submersion.
  • IP44 (dusk-to-dawn sensor/timer) – protected against solid objects over 1mm and water splashing from any direction. Suitable for outdoor use sheltered from direct rain where possible.

Are the cable connectors waterproof?

Yes. All Plug & Play connectors feature screw-lock O-ring seals that keep the connection weatherproof when fully tightened. Always ensure the screw collar is hand-tight before leaving connectors outdoors.

Can I bury cables underground?

The heavy-duty rubber cables are designed for outdoor use. If you bury cables, we recommend running them through conduit to protect against ground movement and garden tools. The connectors themselves should remain above ground and accessible. Contact us first for conduit or advice.

Can the transformer be left outside all year?

Our 30W and 100W transformers are IP64 rated and designed for permanent outdoor installation when wall or fence mounted off the ground. They should not be submerged or left sitting in standing water.

Timers, Sensors & Dimming

Are the dusk-to-dawn timers compatible with both 12V and 24V systems?

Yes. The LV Outdoors Dusk to Dawn Sensor & Timer works with 12V or 24V AC/DC systems. It supports a maximum load of 150W and uses approximately 6W of transformer capacity itself.

Can I set the lights to turn off before dawn?

Yes. The LV Outdoors timer has four settings: off at dawn, or automatic off after 4, 6, or 8 hours.

Can I dim the lights remotely?

The LV Outdoors Wireless Remote Control & Receiver system provides on/off wireless switching at up to 30–40m range. Adding extra receivers lets you control up to 8 independent lighting zones.

Do standard AlderMax or wall lights support dimming?

Standard AlderMax spotlights and wall lights are not dimmable via the transformer. Zone switching is available via the remote control/receiver system.
